About the Project

I-66 Eastbound Direct Access Ramp to Metro

This project, part of the I-66 Inside the Beltway improvements, will provide direct access from eastbound I-66 to the West Falls Church Metrorail station by constructing a new ramp connection between two existing ramps (eastbound I-66 to Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) and the eastbound I-66 collector-distributor road adjacent to the station's parking garage).

Currently, vehicles exit from I-66, turn right to head south on Route 7, turn left at the signalized intersection at Haycock Road, and then turn left onto Falls Church Drive. VDOT has identified operational and safety issues with this maneuver, especially during morning and evening peak periods. This direct access will save motorists bound for the Metrorail station time and reduce traffic on already congested Route 7 in these two intersections.

All improvements will be performed within existing VDOT right-of-way.

Crews install a new bridge beam over Leesburg Pike as part of widening the ramp from eastbound Leesburg Pike to I-66 East. (August 28, 2020)

Newly installed beams over Leesburg Pike will widen the bridge to accommodate vehicles traveling from I-66 East toward the West Falls Church-VT/UVA Metrorail Station. (September 1, 2020)

The exit ramp from I-66 East to Leesburg Pike is being widened as part of the ramp improvement. (August 5, 2020)
