I-66 Eastbound Widening Plan of Work
The I-66 Eastbound Widening Project is being built in 3 phases:
Phase 1A - June 2018 to September 2018
Construction of the outside (right) shoulder strengthening so traffic can be shifted to the right.
Completed mid-September 2018
Phase 1B - Completed Late April 2020 Shifted traffic to the right and constructed the inside widening in the I-66 median (left side). This phase included widening four bridges and relocating the pier of a pedestrian bridge over I-66.
Phase 2 - August 2019 to Summer 2020 Shift traffic to the left, partially on the newly widened roadway section, and construct the outside widening along the I-66 right shoulder. This phase includes widening two bridges, installation of new noise wall, and the reconfiguration of the Westmoreland and Lee Highway ramps.
Completed July 2020
Phase 3A - Summer 2020 to early Fall 2020 Split traffic over the Bon Air Bridge so the center section of the bridge deck can be reconstructed.
Completed October 2020
Phase 3B - Fall 2020 Surface pavement and permanent pavement markings, signage, and lighting. Traffic will be in its final configuration.
Completed December 2020
